505 Worlds Cork 2022

The Royal Cork Yacht Club hosted the 2022 5O5 World Championships from the 1st -13th August this year after a two year hiatus due to Covid-19.

I was asked to design and make the sailing trophies for this international event. The brief was to create five different trophies for overall winners, race winners and club presentations.

I based my design on the Championship logo which featured the dinghy sailing under spinnaker with the 505 emblazoned on the artwork.

The trophies featured a mainsail, jib and spinnaker, welded and angled forward to give a 3D effect and the impression of movement. The spinnaker had a hole cut through the sail, with a ‘5’ etched into the stainless steel, to mirror the 505 logo.

This also allowed a view of the angled main and jib behind. The rere support and base were lacquered mahogany.

Here, I designed the main and jib as one section, with the spinnaker fixed to the front and the ‘505’ logo engraved into the timber. The sails were positioned on a raised, angled support, again to give the impression of movement.
